Design calculations for fast plasma position control in Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research

چکیده
We present the results of fast time scale plasma control simulations for the proposed Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) tokamak. Here, the fast plasma control includes stabilization of the vertical instability and rapid radial position control. As a simulation tool, we use the tokamak simulation code (TSC). We evaluate the power supply requirements for both the vertical and radial position control with a similar approach to that which was employed in the analysis of the tokamak physics experiments (TPX). In particular, we investigate the efficacy of control coil locations to minimize the power supply requirements. From this study, it is shown that two separate sets of control coils, one responsible for vertical control and the other responsible for radial control, are required to provide robust control of both vertical and radial position for all the anticipated plasmas in KSTAR experiments. © 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. The Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) Project is the major effort of the Korean National Fusion Program (KNFP) to develop a steady-state-capable advanced superconducting tokamak to establish a scientific and technological basis for an attractive fusion reactor. Major parameters of the tokamak are: major radius 1.8 m, minor radius 0.5 m, toroidal field 3.5 Tesla, and plasma...
متن کاملPlasma image edge detection based on the visible camera in the EAST device
The controlling of plasma shape and position are essential to the success of Tokamak discharge. A real-time image acquisition system was designed to obtain plasma radiation image during the discharge processes in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) device. The hardware structure and software design of this visible camera system are introduced in detail. According to the gen...
متن کاملNumerical study for design of the passive stabilizer and its impact on MHD stability in the proposed KSTAR plasma
The effect of the passive plate stabilizer on the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability is numerically studied in order to guide its design in the proposed Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR). The parametric study is systematically performed by taking into account the two major variables: the plate’s distance from the plasma surface, and the poloidal (toroidally continuo...

متن کاملDesign and Construction of the KSTAR Tokamak
The extensive design effort has been focused on two major aspects of the KSTAR project mission, steady-state operation capability and “advanced tokamak” physics. The steady-state aspect of mission is reflected in the choice of superconducting magnets, provision of actively cooled in-vessel components, and longpulse current-drive and heating systems. The “advanced tokamak” aspect of the mission ...
